Yes, LWN got a free ticket to the Superbowl of racing.  While any affair is enjoyable if you can walk around drinking, if that is the best thing the sport has to offer, then I still don’t get NASCAR…….or their point system.  Don’t get me wrong it was an enjoyable experience and was fun.  But first some observations:

1.  Everyone hates Kurt Busch……apparently because he drives like a dick. That was the best information I got.  But isn’t Tony Stewart a fat slob who drives like a dick too?  He’s the fan favorite.
2. The flyover was good….not stadium good, but what can you do.
3.  Some pastor was glad NASCAR isn’t all heathen….they still allow prayer
4.  The first 10 laps, then crashes are cool.
5.  Competition cautions or whatever they are called make no sense.  If I am leading the race and they make me caution so the field can catch up, then why am I trying to lead the race? 
6.  NASCAR fans are a sect of Americans that I have not come across in some time.
7.  The event is a party and an enjoyable one.  I’d actually advise going to check out a race for a different atmosphere.

Examples:  Some dude who slams a beer can against the urinal and says, “I’m damn glad I passed those kidney stones last night.”

The number of Dixie flags on the motor homes.

People agree to park in a field usually reserved for cows and their shit.

What’s the deal with holding up your cell phones so people can hear the cars go by?  Are the people not in stands going to pick up something important about the race from this?

This was the line, or lack thereof.  Granted we showed up minutes before the national anthem, but I figured there would still be a line.  The stands were pretty full though. 

This one is difficult to see, but it’s either a bunch of straight up rednecks or people dressing up like rednecks to mock rednecks while going to see a NASCAR race.  They were equipped with mullet wigs, cut off jean shorts and other necky attire.  I don’t get this phenomenon, but I have seen it at sporting events regularly.  Were these people trying to be clever, or just playing into and subsequently deepening a stereotype?

The dude in the middle was being carried out by his friends during lap 40 or so.  It was the first and last actual mullett I saw at the race.

I could continue to bitch about being unemployed, but I think you already know my feelings about that.  So….

Albert Haynesworth gets a 7-year $100 million deal (41 mil guaranteed).  Huh?  So Dan Snyder is giving a guy who plays mainly on running downs at least 41 mil.  We all know that Haynesworth will get cut before the contract is over, but that much money to someone who doesn’t play every snap and is over 300 pounds and is closing in on the age of 30….that’s insanity.  Perhaps if I majored in face-stomping I too could be well compensated. 

The Redskins also re-signed DeAngelo Hall.  That was not a joke.   Hall is the best hype man since Flava-flav.

At least the Dodgers and their ownership have come to some sense and are rejecting to play ball (pun intended) with Manny Ramirez and his scumbag agent Scott Boras.  Boras claims there are other serious offers out there, but the Dodgers have refused to “bid against themselves” as they put it. 

In other news Robert Vaden still plays college basketball.  I thought he was a sophomore in the 2004-2005 season when I was in grad school.  Then he would lose a year of eligibility when transfereing to UAB. 

The Raiders have obviously gone insane.  Maybe you didn’t hear that Nnamdi Asomugha signed a retarded contract recently.  He is guaranteed $28.5 for two years then in year three the Raiders must pay him at least the average of the top five highest paid corner backs or $16.8 in change and they can’t franchise him, meaning that Asomugha could sign two monster contracts in his career.  Wow.   

Personally, I don’t care as much as NFL front office people do.  I think it’s high comedy that Al Davis toys with other NFL owners like this by pissing them off.  By all accounts Asomugha is a man of high character who donates money and time to kids in the Bay area and beyond.

Of course this is the commercial for Prime U, where Deon Sanders gives tutelage to a bunch of guys going into the NFL draft.  Yes, Prime time.  And I won’t watch this because?

Combine highlights:

1.  Rich Eisen running the 40 yard dash in a suit.

2.  Alabama OT Andre Smith has cost himself millions of dollars by showing up at the draft out of shape……then leaving early while telling NOBODY.

3.  Pat White was the best QB at the combine.  Yes, the Pat White no one wants to play quarterback looked better than Matthew Stafford, who refused to throw, Mark Sanchez who the NFL network loves, and Josh Freeman of Kansas State who some had pegged as the number 1 QB in the draft back in October.

4.  Aaron Curry from Wake Forest lived up to the hype running a 4.56 40, 25 reps on the bench, and a 37 inch vert.  His 3 cone was not great, but good enough.  He’s going to be drafted in the top 5.

5.  I think overall Donald Brown of UConn was the most impressive running back.  The nation’s leading rusher didn’t do anything amazing, but I think he is going to be a player.

6.  With all the hype the NFL network gave Brian Robiske and Malcolm Jenkins, you would have thought they cured cancer.  Jenkins will still be a good NFL player I think, but he didn’t wow anyone at the combine.  Robiske did fine, but I don’t think that required 30-40 minutes of air time.  I think he and Sanchez got 90% of a two hour segment.  Also, where was the hype for James Laurinaitis?  All he did was kick ass at Ohio State for years.  Apparently Laurinaitis got asked a question by one NFL team, “why should we draft you, when was the last time a linebacker from Ohio State was worth a shit?” 

7.  I don’t think anyone should draft Darius Hayward-Bey, but then again I thought DeSean Jackson was going to be terrible.

8.  Mike Mayock is the best analyst in the NFL……BARNONE.  He provides insight instead of puns and quips.

9.  I may be biased and this is a sweeping generalization, but all the Big Ten and Big East players seemed camera ready, while the SEC kids are certainly not.

10.  Players I like by position

QB-  Rhett Bomar:  Maybe he can get some automotive sponsorships in the NFL
RB-  Donald Brown, Knowshon Moreno
WR-  I like Kenny Britt and Jeremy Maclin.  Britt has size and Maclin is crazy versatile.
TE-  Travis Beckum
OL-  Louis Vasquez, Jason Smith, Lydon Murtha was THE workout warrior.
DL-  Brian Orakpo, Connor Barwin

“Ring, Ring, Ring,” goes my cell phone.  I answer not knowing the number hoping it is someone from a decent company looking to hire someone.  How silly of me.  When I ask the woman on the phone to give me more information on the position she says, “we’ll tell you at the interview.”  Well let’s say my spidey sense is tingly at this point.

I have of course agreed to the interview….because I don’t have shit else to do. 

Now I search for their website.  Nothing…..until I find something that literally looks as if it is save-my-home-bro.  No lie that’s what I THOUGHT it said.  Let’s just say its similiar.  Ok, I like helping people, and keeping them from being foreclosed upon seems like a noble cause.  But remember, it’s a marketing (read sales) position.  How?

Never mind, I found another site by the same company where they have an “insurance school!”  Well hip, hip, hooray!  So it’s actaully a marketing (read sales, get pitched) position.  I’m going to sit there while some asshole wearing shitty, fake gold jewelry tries to tell me how much money I can make once I pass my classes……..WHICH THEY CONVIENIENTLY OFFER!  Well cover me in shit.  Stupid morons would jump at the opportunity not realizing that they orginally CAME IN TO GET PAID MONEY, not piss it away on some scam class.

Look, I’m not an elitest but I’ll put any information I learned in undergrad and grad school up against these “scholarly instructors” who probably can’t instruct their way around a paper bag.

If I walk into this thing and it’s a group interview, I’m going to curse these fuckers out, try to get everyone else to leave, then burn the fucking building to the ground.  But they won’t let you leave until you’ve heard the pitch.  They will tell you how motivated people with no salary can make $50,000 EASY.  Right, and if you beleive that, I slept with Megan Fox last night……you know sexually.

I have been to these interviews before where they advertise “sports marketing firm, entry level positions.”  You know what it actually is?  Business to business soliciting where you try to peddle office products made in some third world country to REAL businesses that actually want to accomplish something and don’t need your bullshit to do so.

Can we get these people killed?  Can monster.com, careerbuilder.com and craigs list stop letting these scumbags continute this charade? 

But my last question is, where do these snake-oil salesmen get their money?  I guess they travel from town to town feasting on the flesh of babies and killing elephants for their tusks to keep their fake businesses going…..because “they have a business model.”

In the last week and a half, the most productive things I have done are the following……in no particular order.

I beat NES game Shingen the Ruler, conquering Asia once and for all.

If you aren’t familiar with the game, then you are a fool.   

Continuing with the NES theme, I am attempting to rush for over 4,000 yards with OJ Anderson of the New York Giants in Tecmo Superbowl.  After 7 games I have over 2,000 yards on the ground.  Baring injury, I am right on track.

I got to file unemployment, and will now make a whopping $275 a week until that runs out.  So let’s just call it a significant pay cut.

Played disc golf and stood in stagnant water to retrive an errant throw. 

Walked the dog more regularly and have picked up about 4,000 pounds of dog shit.

Steamed the kitchen floor and nearly passed out because I added some cleanser to the water creating toxic fumes.

I watched the snuggie blanket commercial endlessly and began to wonder, “if I started a cult which color snuggie would my followers wear?”

Got three free meals.

Bowl games:

I ended up going just under 50% on bowl games and decided not to wager on them after watching the games prior to xmas. 

It all started going downhill after BYU decided to lay a moron-sized fight club egg against an Arizona team that probably didn’t even deserve to be in a bowl game.

Southern Miss probably didn’t deserve to beat Troy, but did probably because they have a kicker on their team with the last name of “Barefoot”.  I’t like a book detective named “Bookman,” or an ice cream driver called “Cone.”  Plus there was a totally sweet play where a Southern Miss WR, who has legs as soft as Mike Sherrard shattered his leg somehow against the grass.

In probably the best bowl game match-up TCU proved they were totally legit this year by dispatching Boise State and their magic and trickery 17-16.  I still hate Gary Patterson’s strange 3-5-3 defense but it’s obvious he gets some athletes.

Did Jimmy Clauson come of age against Hawaii?  I certainly hope not, but if he did then he certainly will be dealt some massive, crushing defeats next season.  In the offseason I’m sure he’ll end up getting cited for underaged drinking again.  Also there was this.  Notre Dame is convinced that someone is out to “sabotage their recruiting efforts.”  Does anyone else see the humor in this?

In the Motor City Bowl Central Michigan coaches must have determined that using their most powerful offensive weapon would have been unfair?  Since they were determined not to let Dan LeFevour leave the pocket.

 Pat White led West Virginia to a victory over upstart North Carolina, but they didn’t cover the spread either.  Just like Troy, Boise State, Central Michigan, Hawaii etc.  I think Pat White should get a shot at NFL QB, but maybe that’s just me.  Someone with a sports background and no job.

In the Champs Sports Bowl, Wisconsin proved they will never be a great team unless they embrace speed, as they got waxed by a Florida State team that only has talent but no idea what “team” means.

Cal beat Miami, but I’m honestly shocked it was as close as the score would indicate.  You see LWN had inside info from people about the whole Robert Marve situation before it unraveled.  Apparently, Miami players really, really wanted Jacory Harris to be their quarterback.  They’d go as far as to drop balls IN GAMES ON PURPOSE to prove their point.  *Recruiting note-  Don’t ever take an entire senior class from one school, regardless of their talent level.

Things got funnier when Miami told Marve where he couldn’t transfer to……Oddly enough, they won’t allow him to go to the teams that tampered with him.  Maybe he’ll end up at USF.  We’ll see though.

In any event it was hilarious to watch this game in a bar, while paying closer attention to the UFC fights on that night.  LabBoy was in conversation with a female LSU fan who was probably the most annoying person I met in 2008, most certainly the most annoying in December of 2008.  She ended up going home with a firefighter.

Northern Illinois looked like dogs playing a shitty Louisiana Tech team in Shreveport.  Hopefully they didn’t get shanked on their way out of the stadium as Shreveport is one of the most dangerous places I have ever been.

Rutgers won, against NC State and their 7 QB rotation.  Yawn.

Missouri showed me that they were in fact one of the most unimpressive teams of the 2008 season by needed overtime to beat Northwestern.  With that much offense, there is no way they game should have been close.  Good luck Chase Daniel, good luck.

17, maybe 18 Maryland fans made the trip to Boise to see their team defeat Nevada in the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl.  If there was one team I would not bet on or against this past season it was definately Maryland.

Western Michigan proved the MAC didn’t deserve more bowl bids by getting rocked by Rice, the school with smart kids.

Oregon and their bruising QB Jeremiah Masoli dispatched Oklahoma State who looked to be a good team.  I don’t get bowl season at all.  Hey, Oregon can we now say you will challenge for the PAC 10 crown again next season, then you can let everyone down again?  Ding, Ding……here comes the hypemobile.

In the Bell Helicopter’s we love George Bush Bowl, Houston took care of Air Force, but I thought they might lay 60 on AF instead of a mere 34.

Fans were treated to an absolute shit-fest in El Paso at the Brut Sun Bowl.  Oregon State eeked out the 3-0 victory, the Beavers who was one useless loss away from winning the PAC-10 won a 3-0 game against a middle of the road Big East team.  HOLLER!

I was somewhat perplexed by Boston College’s 16-14 loss to Vanderbilt, who incidently played like a crumbling house of cards on fire down the stretch this season.  I wonder if/what effect this had on Jeff Jagodzinski’s decision to interview for NFL teams then get fired.  That whole situation is still strange to me.

If Kansas beats Minnesota in the insight.com bowl and it’s on the NFL Network, does anyone notice?

SEC fans rejoiced in boisterous fashion championing their league……as usual because LSU fucking rolled Georgia Tech making Paul Johnson’s option look like an outdated offense.

Iowa notched the Big Ten’s ONLY win this bowl season when they defeated South Carolina in the Outback bowl.  It was probably a case of too many bloomin’ onions for the Ole Ball Coaches’ team.

Apparently Nebraska went to a bowl game……and won, defeating this year’s most disappointing team….Clemson.

Georgia beat Michigan State and no one was surprised.

I have a friend, we will call him Kaplan572, he’s a Penn State man who was enraged when it looked like Oregon State was going to play Penn State in the Rose Bowl.  He said they had nothing to win by playing the game.  Well, do you feel better now?

Why didn’t I place imaginary wagers this bowl season?  Because Ole Miss beat up on Texas Tech……That’s why.

How does Cincinatti score on the first posession then get shut out by Virginia Tech the rest of the way?

Alabama fans were served a warm glass of ”shut the hell up” when they got totally demolished by a Utah team that has a gripe against the BCS.  If you play in a BCS game, are undefeated and win, including road wins over ranked teams, maybe you should be the National Champ.  That’s all I’m saying.

The UConn – Buffalo matchup was closer than you think.  Even though I dropped about 100 bucks on beer, I recall UB nearly scoring a TD late in the game which would have made it a 1 posession game, but instead the ball bounced off a receiver into the defender’s arms and he took it 500 yards for a score.  Then again, UConn was by far the better team on this day. 

Ohio State actually showed up for a bowl game against a better team, which was odd.  But left too much time for Texas……Thinking back, this game ended up proving nothing.  Why was Ohio State even playing in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl?

Ball State really spiralled out of control after losing to Buffalo, to the point where their fans began bitching about how they were the “real” MAC champs because their record was better than Buffalo……even though the game was played on a neutral field and Ball State LOST.  Tulsa really handed it to them.

As for Oklahoma, what in the hell were they doing running sets from under center?  They didn’t do it all season, but when the fake national championship was on the line they went to it regularly.  Tebow obviously channelled the power of his lord and took the game over.  Another note, Urban Meyer certainly beleives that speed kills.  That was on display on both sides of the ball and special teams in the national championship game.

First off, I would like to give a big thanks to whatever idiot decided to schedule the BCS Championship on a Thursday.  After about 4 hrs sleep, it was pretty tough to wake up for work today.  Living in Gainesville, I knew the town would be real crazy.  I stayed in and watched the game with a very nervous, Tebow-loving Mrs. THRILLHO.  The game was very intense, and there was little sleep for me afterwards with all the honking horns and fireworks going off outside my window till about 4am.

As for the game….  I’m not quite sure how unbiased fans viewed the game (according to the only column I read today, it was a ‘letdown’), but I thought it was an intense chess match between two great teams and coaches.  The momentum clearly changed all game until the late 4th quarter.  I don’t think anyone will argue that Florida looked better in the first half, they didn’t.  Oklahoma left a lot of points on the field, but you have to give the Gators defense a lot of credit, holding the Sooners to ZERO points in two first and goal situations late in the second half, including a nice patty-cake interception by Wright at the goal line right before halftime.

Percy Harvin looked like a man on a mission.  If that was 85-90%, then I would take that over 100% anyone else on the field.  Around 175 all purpose yards after a serious injury.  That play where the defensive lineman yanked his ankle after the tackle was real dirty though.

What else can you say about Superman?  The quarterbacks on my favorite teams (mainly the Bills) have squashed my expectations.  When I see a QB throw two early interceptions, I expect it to really get in their head (Trent & JP).  Usually QBs will be more tentative with their passes and risk taking.  Tebow is the opposite, his passes get tighter, he makes more clutch plays, he rockets jump passes into tight coverage for game winning touchdowns.  The guy is unbelievable.  What else can be said?  In very critical 3rd and 10 situations, he will see nobody open and run straight THROUGH 2 linebackers.  Every time he hops up, he waves his arms, and gets the crowd going.  You would expect any other QB to lay there for a minute and be taken out for a couple plays.  He just has a combination that no other college player has.  His drive, leadership, talent, and lack of fear (not to mention his circumcision skills) are what made him the most decorated college player in history (I’m talking about his trophies, not his philipino foreskin collection)…. plus he’s like SOOO dreamy!  Anyways, before I finish my Tebow fluffing, I have to say that the guy deserves all the praise he gets, and more (including this years Heisman).  God bless!!

I have to give Bradford some credit though.  He is unbelievably accurate.  Some of his throws were just unreal.  When he was pressured, things fell apart for him.  The 2 interceptions he threw were truly great defensive plays though, and can’t all be put on him.  Both were pretty much taken away from the receivers.  I think we all saw who the best player in the country was last night, and it wasn’t Sam Bradford (*side note, Bradford looks like a douchebag chipmunk). Chris Brown had a fantastic game as well.  The Gators didn’t look ready for the run game and it opened up in a big way.  I

liked it when Franks (the guy that called Tebow the 4th best QB in the Big XII) got called out by the announcers after Tebow brought the Gators up 2 scores on a very impressive drive.  They said “that might be the dumbest statement ever made”.  Nothing like getting called out in front of the national stage WHILE getting beat down by the guy you called out.  Nice one Franks….  I believe one would call that “eating your words”…

Anyways, congrats to the Gators, they deserved it.  One point away from running the table.  However I must say that I am glad they lost to Ole Miss.  It sparked more playoff debate, and the more debate we get, the more likely a playoff will happen……. one day…….

Finally, as a University at Buffalo alumn, I can safely name the one thing I am MOST envious about regarding the University of Florida is missing class due to football (and sometimes basketball to a lesser extent) IS acceptable!

Today Bowl Fever SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPS through college football outposts across the nation.  From Annapolis to Colorado Springs, from Tampa to Tucson fans are ready to cheer on their squads in small numbers (most likely).

11:00 AM-  We will start with what looks like the AM snoozefest.  Navy and Wake Forest get together to play in the inaugural Eagle Bank Bowl.  Fans will be treated to Wake’s terrible passing game and Navy’s nearly non-existent passing game.  The over is 44.  The last time these two squads met the score was 24-17 Navy.

This time just take the over (44), as  I have no idea who will win this game.

4:30 PM-  South Florida meets Memphis in the St. Petersburg Bowl played in the ugliest baseball stadium in America.  Both teams have not had great seasons.  Memphis’ biggest win came against Southern Miss who ended the season 6-6 (an identical record to Memphis).

South Florida on the other hand, went 2-5 in the Big East and did beat Kansas.  They started the season 5-0 then went 2-5 down the stretch to find themselves in this “bowl.”

South Florida is giving 11, but I think they’ll be fine.

8:00 PM-  The thrilling nightcap is a tilt between BYU and Arizona which should provide the best game of the day in the Las Vegas Bowl.

BYU is ranked #16 in the nation and they are getting 3 points?  They were 10-2 and the PAC 10 is not that awesome.  I’ll take the field goal and laugh my way to the bank.
