We have entered the doldrums of the 2007 college football season. While this is sad, we can reflect on the season. We can also discuss the Heisman Trophy which will be handed out on Saturday.
The season began with a bang, and ended with a thud for some teams. Let’s look at some of the madness that occurred.
- Week 1- #5 Michigan loses to Appalachian State.
- Week 2- South Florida beats #17 Auburn
- Week 3- Alabama beats #16 Arkansas, Kentucky beats #9 Louisville, Utah beats #11 UCLA
- Week 4- Toledo beats Iowa State
- Week 5- #18 South Florida beat #5 West Virginia, Colorado beats #3 Oklahoma, Kansas State beats #7 Texas, Maryland beats #10 Rutgers, Georgia Tech beats #13 Clemson, Auburn beats #4 Florida
- Week 6- Illinois beats #5 Wisconsin, Stanford beats #2 USC
- Week 7- #17 Kentucky beats #1 LSU, Oregon State beats #2 California (CAL WAS NUMBER 2)
- Week 8- Rutgers beats #2 South Florida, Vanderbilt beats #6 South Carolina
- Week 9- Mississippi State beats #14 Kentucky, #23 UConn beats #10 South Florida
- Week 10- Florida State beats #2 Boston College
- Week 11- Wisconsin beats #12 Michigan, Mississippi State beats #22 Alabama, Illinois beats #1 Ohio State, Maryland beats #8 Boston College
- Week 12- Arizona beats #2 Oregon, Texas Tech beats #4 Oklahoma
- Week 13- Arkansas beats #1 LSU, UCLA beat #9 Oregon
- Week 14- Oregon State beats #17 Oregon, Pittsburgh beats #2 West Virginia, #9 Oklahoma beats #1 Missouri.
This of course leaves us with #2 LSU playing #1 Ohio State in the BCS National Championship game. But lets look at how the UB Bulls are the true title contender at 5-7. With apologies to Slippery Rock U, here we go. UB should be ranked above Ohio State.
- UB beat Toledo
- Toledo beat Iowa State
- Iowa State beat Iowa
- Iowa beat Illinois
- Illinois beat Ohio State
This proves UB belongs in the BCS game! Or here is the alternative scenario, where UB should be ranked above LSU.
- UB beat Kent State
- Kent State beat Ohio U
- Ohio U beat Louisiana – Lafayette
- Louisiana Lafayette beat Middle Tennessee State
- Middle Tennessee State beat UL – Monroe
- UL – Monroe beat Alabama
- Alabama beat Arkansas
- Arkansas beat LSU
This clearly shows the UB Bulls have been shafted by the voters and BCS. Their 5-7 record is no indication of their proposed success in the National Title Game.
HEISMAN HYPE
Here are my top 4 contenders for John Heisman’s trophy. Keep in mind Heisman was a proponent of this new-fangled creation, the forward pass. Here are the invitees and my expected finishing order.
5. CHASE DANIEL

YEAR: Junior
STATS: 372/534, 69.7%, 4170 yards passing, 33 Passing TDs, 10 INTs, 4 Rushing TDs
BIGGEST WIN/BIGGEST LOSS: Kansas/ OU TWICE
CAN WIN/CAN’T WIN BECAUSE: Led Missouri to a number 1 ranking/ too many loses, if they won against OU in the Big 12 Title game he would be a contender.
4. SAM BRADFORD

YEAR: Freshman
STATS: 216/308, 70.1%, 2879 Yards Passing, 34 TDs, 7 INTs
BIGGEST WIN/LOSS: Texas Mizzou twice/ Colorado, Texas Tech (he was knocked out of the game)
CAN WIN/CAN’T WIN BECAUSE: He came from nowhere and has great stats/ Too young
3. COLT BRENNAN

YEAR: Senior
STATS: 337/472, 4174 Yards passing, 38 Passing TDs, 14 INTs, 8 Rushing TDs
BIGGEST WIN/LOSS: Fresno State? Boise State? Washington?/ None
CAN WIN/CAN’T WIN BECAUSE: His stats are eye popping, somehow got Hawaii into a BCS game, made ESPN follow Hawaii football, galvanized the Island chain/ PLAY SOMEBODY. Also, WAC bias and voters don’t stay up until 3am to catch Hawaii home games.
2. DARREN MCFADDEN

YEAR: Junior
STATS: Rushing- 304 att, 1724 yards, 5.7 yds per carry, 15 TDs Receiving- 21 catches, 164 yards, 7.8 yards per catch, 1 TD Passing- 6/11, 54.5%, 4 TDs
BIGGEST WIN/LOSS: LSU / Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama
CAN WIN/CAN’T WIN BECAUSE: His stats are video game-esque, he completely took over the game against LSU, he also did all of this while splitting time in the backfield with Felix Jones. / Will split votes with my proposed winner, too many loses.
1. TIM TEBOW

YEAR: Sophomore
STATS: Passing- 217/317, 3132 yards, 68.5%, 29 TDs, 6 INTs Rushing- 189 attempts, 838 yards, 22 TDs
BIGGEST WIN/LOSS: Tennessee, Kentucky / LSU, Georgia, Auburn
CAN WIN/CAN’T WIN BECAUSE: Did you see the stats? Almost 1,000 rushing from a QB who also threw for over 3,000 yards, responsible for 51 total TDs. Amazing. / Only a Sophomore, will split votes with McFadden.
UDOJ and I agree that being a Sophomore should not prevent you from winning the Heisman. As UDOJ puts it, what if Tebow were a Senior that came from nowhere with these stats would anyone care? Obviously not.
THOSE WHO SHOULD BE INVITED, BUT PROBABLY WON’T
KEVIN SMITH, RB UCF

STATS: 415 attempts, 2448 yards, 5.9 per carry, 29 TDs
GRAHAM HARRELL, QB TEXAS TECH

STATS: 468/644, 5298 yards passing, 72.7%, 45 TDs, 14 INTs

I applaud you for not even mentioning that fraud Pat White. Don’t even get me started on that joke Steve Slaton. Heisman candidates need to find a way back on the field when their team needs them and make plays (and White never made any plays) When Pat White goes down, and WVU needs Slaton to step up, he always flakes out. In the loss to South Florida, White goes down in the first half. Slaton’s numbers: 54 yards on 14 carries! Last week vs Pitt White goes down again. Slaton’s numbers: 11 yards on 9 carries! Next year when the Big East starts running all these commercials and buying ad space for these two clowns trying to pump up their Heisman campaigns, I hope everyone is smart enough to not pay attention.

If Tebow wins, THRILLHO gets facepunched. Simple as that.
